While there is a lot of published research about ocular rosacea, a cure still has not been found. However, there are ways an eye doctor can help you manage this condition, so that the eyes can receive the relief they need.<\/p>\n<p><b>If you experience dry eyes it may be due to ocular rosacea.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is ocular rosacea?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Ocular rosacea is a common inflammatory eye condition that causes redness, itching, and a burning sensation around the eyes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Ocular rosacea mainly affects people after the age of 50, but reports of this condition affecting people even in their 30s and 40s is not uncommon.<\/p>\n<p>The primary parts of the eyes that are affected are the eyelids, conjunctiva and occasionally the cornea.<\/p>\n<p>This condition may present itself as various eye conditions such as chronic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/dry-eye\/blepharitis\/\">blepharitis<\/a>, corneal vascularization, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/dry-eye\/meibomian-gland-dysfunction\/\">meibomian gland dysfunction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Causes of ocular rosacea<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Researchers aren\u2019t sure of the exact reason as to why ocular rosacea happens however, they have found that 85% of people with ocular rosacea have blocked oil glands at the edges of their eyelids. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/dry-eye\/how-is-meibomian-gland-dysfunction-treated\/\">Blocked meibomian glands<\/a>, that produce the oil in the tears, can be successfully treated.<\/p>\n<p>When these tiny glands are blocked the result is infection or inflammation of the margins of the eyelids area causing irritated, red and swollen eyelids This then leads to crusty eyelashes and even sore and itchy sensations in the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Other factors causing ocular rosacea include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Heredity<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Eyelash mites, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/eyelid-conditions\/blepharitis\/how-does-the-demodex-mite-cause-blepharitis\/\">Demodex<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Blocked glands in the eyelids<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Bacterial involvement<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Environmental factors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Can ocular rosacea be prevented?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Research has shown that avoiding certain irritants can help reduce the likelihood of aggravating ocular rosacea. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Alcohol<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Hot baths or saunas<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Spicy or hot foods or beverages<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Strenuous exercise<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Wind, sunlight, or extreme temperatures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Signs and symptoms of ocular rosacea<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Ocular rosacea symptoms are usually similar to dry eye. Treatment to help reduce symptoms may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Antibiotics<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/dry-eye\/can-warm-compresses-help-dry-eyes\/\">warm moist compress<\/a> applied to the eyelids<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/dry-eye\/guide-to-eye-drops\/\">Eye drops<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Ointments with steroids<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Probing, thin rods are used to unplug the glands allowing more oil to flow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In rare cases, if not treated, severe ocular rosacea can cause serious eye problems affecting one\u2019s vision. This can be either scarring in the eyelids or damage on the cornea.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Tips to prevent flare ups<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>To help manage ocular rosacea following a good eye care routine to help prevent flare-ups.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">At least twice a day, wash the eyelids gently with warm water or a product the eye doctor recommended. This will keep the eyelids clean.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Avoid wearing contact lenses during flare-ups.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Avoid makeup. If the eyes are inflamed, makeup can irritate them.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Avoid things that worsen or trigger ocular rosacea to prevent flare-ups.
