The appropriately prescribed lenses and prisms can have immediate and profound effects on the total system and can contribute towards integrating the individual.<\/p>\n<p>After a program of vision therapy, I routinely see immediate improvements in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Posture<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Language skills<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Eye hand and eye body coordination<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Visual skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Often, I see a child that could not catch a ball, catch it easily, or one that did not speak, start engaging in conversation with the glasses on.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Signs vision therapy is needed<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>In addition to lenses and prisms, sometimes with or without tints, vision therapy is an important treatment for individuals with vision difficulties<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The most commonly observed signs, indicating that vision therapy could benefit a child include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Poor eye contact<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Repetitive hand movements<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Staring<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Side looking<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Light sensitivity<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Poor coordination<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Learning challenges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These above may be signs of inefficient or poorly developed visual skills.<\/p>\n<p>A customized program of vision therapy provides the opportunity to develop these visual skills in a guided and therapeutic manner.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Examination of visual skills is essential<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>As an integrative optometrist, I recognize the impact a child\u2019s functional visual skills has on their learning and enjoyment of every day tasks.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Assessment of the visual skills for all children on the autistism spectrum should include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Lazy eye<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Eye turns<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Focusing<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Eye teaming<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Eye tracking<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Convergence<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Stereopsis<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Visual processing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is essential to assess vision in the context of nutrition, physical health, development, environmental and genetic factors, cognitive ability, motor, speech and language, and educational demands.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Autism and vision<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Vision is a child\u2019s dominant sense and much of the brain is dedicated to visual learning.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The individual learns most efficiently in a multimodal fashion.
