It can also make it difficult to navigate outdoors, especially on a busy street or crowded sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>In children, the first signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-low-vision\/low-vision\/understanding-low-vision\/\">low vision<\/a> may be clumsiness or inattentiveness, when in reality, the problem is in their vision<b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>While impaired vision comes with many challenges, a low vision eye doctor can offer a variety of strategies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-low-vision\/low-vision\/guide-to-low-vision-magnifiers\/\">vision aids<\/a> that can maximize a child&#8217;s remaining vision<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>There are many causes of low vision and blindness in children:<\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Albinism\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Albinism is an inherited condition that affects the production of melanin- pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes that gives each person their own unique coloring. People with albinism either have very little melanin or no melanin at all.<\/p>\n<p>Albinism affects how the eyes function. Healthy amounts of melanin are used in the development of the retina. Reduced amounts of melanin in the eyes, or none at all, can cause a variety of vision problems including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/what-is-astigmatism\/\">Astigmatism<\/a> \u2014 when the lens is abnormally shaped or the cornea (the clear part at the front of the eye) isn&#8217;t curved correctly, causing blurred vision<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-low-vision\/\">Low vision<\/a> \u2014 irreversible vision loss<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/neuro-optometry\/nystagmus\/\">Nystagmus<\/a> \u2014 involuntary, rapid eye movements<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/neuro-optometry\/vision-and-brain-injuries\/traumatic-brain-injury-and-neuro-optometry\/light-sensitivity\/\">Photophobia<\/a> \u2014 light sensitivity<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-exams\/eye-exams\/am-i-farsighted-or-nearsighted\/\">Poor eyesight<\/a> \u2014 farsightedness or nearsightedness<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/a-guide-to-eye-turns\/\">Eye turn<\/a> \u2014 eyes pointing in different directions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vision problems associated with albinism last a lifetime, but typically don&#8217;t worsen over time.<\/p>\n<h2><b>2. Pediatric cataracts<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/7-common-pediatric-eye-conditions\/\">cataract<\/a> is the cloudiness or opacity that occurs in the eye\u2019s lens. While some cataracts are small and won\u2019t interfere with vision, others are large causing severe vision loss.<\/p>\n<p><b>An estimated 3 out of 10,000 children have cataracts.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Common causes of pediatric cataracts are infections, genetics, and abnormal lens development in utero. If a cataract is small or on the outer edges of the lens, it might not interfere with a child\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n<p>If a cataract interferes with the child\u2019s vision, it should be surgically removed as soon as safely possible.<\/p>\n<h2><b>4. Pediatric glaucoma\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/a-guide-to-childrens-eye-diseases\/\">Pediatric glaucoma<\/a>, also referred to as infantile or childhood glaucoma, is usually diagnosed before a child\u2019s first birthday.<\/p>\n<p><b>Glaucoma causes an increase in the eye\u2019s internal pressure, which can lead to permanent optic nerve damage.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of pediatric glaucoma include vision loss, excessive tearing, cloudiness in the cornea, enlarged eyes, and photosensitivity (light-sensitivity). In many cases, childhood glaucoma can be effectively managed and treated.<\/p>\n<h2><b>5. Retinal diseases\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/guide-to-retinal-diseases\/\">Retinal diseases<\/a>, such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome, Leber congenital amaurosis, retinitis pigmentosa (RP), Stargardt macular dystrophy, and Usher syndrome can cause low vision or blindness in children.<\/p>\n<p><b>A child with any of these retinal diseases should be monitored closely by a low vision optometrist.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Low vision devices for children<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Children with vision loss can live full and independent lives. While lost vision can&#8217;t be restored, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-low-vision\/low-vision\/guide-to-low-vision-magnifiers\/\">low vision devices<\/a>, such as magnifiers and telescopes, that can help maximize a child\u2019s usable vision.
