In other words, lazy eye treatment was <i>usually not<\/i> provided to children older than nine.<\/p>\n<h3><b>What is amblyopia?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, usually causes blurred vision in just one eye which contributes to poor binocular vision and depth perception.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amblyopia<\/strong><strong>\u00a0affects up to<\/strong><b> 3 percent of all children<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Amblyopia may develop due to other vision conditions such as a crossed or wandering eye (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/a-guide-to-eye-turns\/strabismus-crossed-eyes\/strabismus-faqs\/\">strabismus<\/a>), or unequal vision in the two eyes caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/what-is-astigmatism\/\">astigmatism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/what-is-long-sightedness\/\">farsightedness<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/what-is-myopia\/\">nearsightedness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><b>NEI research<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A supported research study conducted by the National Institute of Health\/National Eye Institute (NIH\/NEI) has disproved the long held belief that children with lazy eyes, or amblyopia, cannot be helped after a known cut-off age.
