{"id":14080,"date":"2021-06-16T13:50:05","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T13:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/?page_id=14080"},"modified":"2021-07-18T20:38:58","modified_gmt":"2021-07-18T20:38:58","slug":"myopia-management-the-alarming-rise-in-global-prevalence","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-myopia-management\/myopia-management\/myopia-management-the-alarming-rise-in-global-prevalence\/","title":{"rendered":"Myopia Management: The Alarming Rise in Global Prevalence"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>The National Health and Nutrition Survey data shows that the prevalence of myopia worldwide has nearly doubled from 25% in 1972 to 42% in 2002.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The prevalence of myopia has alarmingly increased over the years, don\u2019t let your child be one of the statistics.<\/p>\n<p>A systematic review and meta-analysis recently published in <i>Ophthalmology<\/i> (May 2016) estimated that myopia will affect nearly 5 billion people worldwide by 2050.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Myopia\u2019s global pandemic<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There have been multiple studies that prove beyond a doubt that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/what-is-myopia\/\">myopia is becoming a global pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i>Archives of Ophthalmology (December 2009)<\/i>, found that the prevalence of myopia was <b>66.4% higher<\/b> among participants (aged 12 to 54 years) in the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) than in the 1971-1972 NHANES.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i>Journal of Clinical Ophthalmology (Vol 14, April 2020)<\/i> found that the prevalence of myopia among secondary school children was 14.2% and tended to increase with grade, from 10.5% in grade six to <b>17.7% in grade nine<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is myopia?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/what-is-myopia\/\">Myopia, also known as nearsightedness<\/a>, occurs when the eye elongates, and light rays are focused in front of the light-sensitive retina rather than directly on it.<\/p>\n<p>For those with myopia, nearby objects remain clear which distant objects appear blurred. Although glasses and standard contact lenses can correct a person\u2019s vision, they don\u2019t treat the underlying cause of myopia or slow its progression.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/what-is-myopia-management\/\">Myopia progression<\/a> refers to the increase in a child\u2019s prescription.
