Although glasses and standard contact lenses can correct a person\u2019s vision, they don\u2019t treat the underlying cause of myopia or slow its progression.<\/p>\n<p><b>Myopia is more than inconvenient but also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/what-is-myopia\/\"> significantly increases the risk<\/a> of developing sight-threatening eye diseases later in life.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Children with myopia tend to show regular progression of their vision over time. However there are ways to slow down this progression, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-myopia-management\/\"><b>myopia management<\/b>.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Optical Options for myopia management<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Some optical interventions for myopia management include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Single vision<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Bifocal lenses<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Progressive addition lenses (multifocals)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Orthokeratology (Ortho-k)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Among these optical interventions, ortho-k shows the most promising results in slowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-myopia-management\/\">myopia progression by 30-50%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Single vision spectacle lenses<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>These standard type of single vision lenses are typically prescribed for vision problems in children and adults, where only one focusing distance (far or close) needs support with glasses.<\/p>\n<p>For those who are myopic, they\u2019ve been found to have only a small treatment effect of less than 14% reduction in myopia progression.<\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Bifocal spectacle lenses<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Bifocal spectacle lenses have 2 optical zones, one for clear distance vision and the other for reading\u00a0 \u2013 the top half corrects for long distance vision and the bottom half for up close vision and reading.<\/p>\n<p>Bifocals are frequently prescribed to children with coordination and eye muscle teaming problems.
