given by Dr. Jamshid Ghajar, MD, PhD, FACS at the Stanford Brain Performance Center (Department of Neurosurgery and Stanford Athletics), at the Stanford University School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>This presentation, called <i>Concussion Guidelines Step 2: Evidence of Subtype Classification<\/i>, is referenced in the Journal of Neurosurgery.<\/p>\n<h2><b>The role of the visual system<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>According to Dr. Ghajar, the eyes and the visual system play an essential role in understanding the nature, cause and treatment for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/neuro-optometry\/vision-and-brain-injuries\/traumatic-brain-injury-and-neuro-optometry\/5-essential-tbi-facts-you-may-not-know\/concussion-and-vision\/\">concussion<\/a><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Examination of the eyes, specifically the oculo-motor functioning, includes the evaluation of binocular vision, eye focusing, eye teaming, and visual perception skills.<\/p>\n<p><b>Any type of oculo-motor or visual dysfunction can result in difficulty acquiring, understanding, and processing visual stimuli.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A visual system dysfunction can trigger or worsen visual symptoms following a brain injury, and lead to an impaired ability to interpret and\u00a0 process visual information.<\/p>\n<p>Oculo-motor impairments may be identified and measured by assessing specific visual skills, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Saccades<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Smooth pursuit<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Conjugate gaze<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Convergence<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Accommodation<\/li>\n<li
