The condition can be difficult to treat and tends to recur, which is why it\u2019s also known as chronic blepharitis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/eyelid-conditions\/blepharitis\/\">Blepharitis can be painful and uncomfortable<\/a>. Unfortunately, this condition isn\u2019t always preventable, but there are ways to reduce your risk of inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>According to a survey conducted by <i>The<\/i> <i>Ocular Surface <\/i>(2009), U.S. eye doctors reported that between 37% and 47% of their patients had some degree of blepharitis.<\/p>\n<p>Blepharitis isn\u2019t contagious and usually doesn&#8217;t cause serious harm to your vision or eyes, but it can feel uncomfortable, but it is important not to just think you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/\">dry eyes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Types of blepharitis\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There are two types of blepharitis &#8211; anterior blepharitis and posterior blepharitis.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anterior blepharitis<\/b> affects the eyelashes on the outside front edge of the eyelid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Posterior blepharitis<\/b> affects the inner edge of the eyelid that touches the eye.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What causes blepharitis?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The main cause of blepharitis is the presence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/eyelid-conditions\/blepharitis\/how-does-the-demodex-mite-cause-blepharitis\/\">dermodex in your eyelids<\/a>, this is a type of mite that feeds on dead skin cells.<\/p>\n<p>Blepharitis can be caused by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Dry eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Bacterial eyelid infection<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Fungal eyelid infection<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Meibomian gland dysfunction<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Parasites (eyelash lice or eyelash mites)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff of the eyebrows and scalp)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/eyelid-conditions\/blepharitis\/\">Blepharitis<\/a> is also associated with skin conditions such as ocular rosacea, dandruff, eczema and psoriasis.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of blepharitis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The most common symptoms of blepharitis are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Burning, red, or stinging eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Crusty yellowy debris at the base of the eyelashes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" the edge of the eyelid, causing misdirected eyelashes or even eyelash loss.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Corneal abrasion<\/b> \u2013 If blepharitis causes your eyelashes to grow inwards, they might rub against the clear front surface of your eye, causing a painful corneal abrasion.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/guide-to-blurry-vision-and-headaches\/when-is-blurred-vision-a-medical-emergency\/pink-eye-what-do-i-do\/\"><b>Pink eye <\/b><\/a>\u2013 Chronic blepharitis can also lead to bacterial pink eye,\u00a0 a type of conjunctivitis. When pink eye and blepharitis occur simultaneously it\u2019s called blepharo-conjunctivitis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How to treat blepharitis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There are various ways you can help reduce your risk of developing this condition or at least control the symptoms, including:<\/p>\n<h3><b>Warm compresses<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Wet a clean washcloth with warm water and place it over your closed eyes for at least 1 minute. This helps loosen the flakes that stick to your eyelashes. It also helps prevent nearby oil glands from clogging.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Eye drops<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Steroid eye drops or artificial tears may reduce redness, swelling and dry eye. Your eye doctor might prescribe an antibiotic eye drop to help the oil glands work better.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Antibiotics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Your eye doctor may recommend you use an antibiotic ointment on your eyes. Place a small amount of ointment on a clean fingertip or cotton swab. Gently apply the ointment to the base of your eyelashes. Your doctor might also prescribe oral antibiotic medicine.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Eyelid scrubs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Dilute no-sting baby shampoo in warm water and soak a clean washcloth, cotton swab applicator, or lint-free pad in it. Gently clean the roots of your eyelashes, then scrub for 15 seconds.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Skin and eyelid hygiene<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>It is very important to keep your skin, hair and eyelids clean. This will help keep your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/eyelid-conditions\/blepharitis\/\"> blepharitis symptoms under control.<\/a> Carefully wash your eyelashes every day with no-sting baby shampoo diluted in warm water.
