{"id":16881,"date":"2021-08-12T16:26:52","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T16:26:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/?page_id=16881"},"modified":"2021-08-12T16:26:52","modified_gmt":"2021-08-12T16:26:52","slug":"should-students-use-blue-light-lenses","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-childrens-eye-exams\/8-tips-to-protect-your-childs-vision\/should-students-use-blue-light-lenses\/","title":{"rendered":"Should Students Use Blue Light Lenses?\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Did you know that almost 100% of blue light rays, compared to fewer than 1% of UV rays, reach the retina?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>In today&#8217;s digital age, optometrists around the world are increasingly being asked, <i>\u2018Are blue light glasses worth it?\u2019<\/i><\/p>\n<p>While there is some debate over the impact of blue light on eye health, there is enough scientific information to provide a reliable answer.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is blue light?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>On the visible spectrum, blue light is a high-energy, short-wavelength light.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-exams\/why-are-annual-eye-exams-important\/blue-light-and-screens\/\"> Blue light<\/a> is emitted mostly by the sun, but it is also emitted by interior light sources and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-myopia-management\/myopia-management\/myopia-management-children-and-digital-devices\/\">digital devices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Blue light stimulates alertness, so it can disrupt sleep patterns<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s problematic, given how many people look\u00a0 at digital devices throughout the day and even into the night.<\/p>\n<p>Few studies have found that blue light generated by smartphones and other digital devices causes long-term or irreparable eye damage.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Is blue light harmful to our eyes?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Since blue light has a higher frequency and energy than other colors of light, it can more easily penetrate the structures of our eyes and reach the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-health\/how-does-the-eye-work\/ocular-anatomy-the-front-of-the-eye\/\">retina<\/a>, the light-sensitive nerve layer at the back of the eye.<\/p>\n<p>One study published in <i>Integrative Biology (2017) <\/i>found that blue light negatively affects human retinal cells and increases oxidative damage, and the frequencies of the blue light is similar to those emitted by digital screens.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that the researchers used retinal cells in a petri dish, as opposed to actual human eyes. The sleep-wake cycle is regulated by circadian rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>According to another study published in the <i>Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology (2015)<\/i>, blue-blocking glasses or lenses may be useful in reducing eye fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>A study published in the <i>Journal of Medical Imaging (2019)<\/i>, found that radiology residents who wore blue light filtering glasses had considerably less computer vision syndrome symptoms, or digital eye strain.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Should students use blue light lenses?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Yes!
