As a result, many people with arthritis also suffer from eye conditions that can affect their clear vision and sometimes even threaten vision loss.<\/p>\n<p>There are a range of successful options to treat the eye conditions caused by arthritis.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Types of arthritis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There are many different types of arthritis, with osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) being the most common.<\/p>\n<p><b>Osteoarthritis <\/b>causes joint pain from long-term overuse and is generally diagnosed among the older population.<\/p>\n<p><b>Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)<\/b> is an autoimmune disease that affects people of all ages. Autoimmune diseases incite a bodily response in which the body attacks itself, including its healthy tissues.<\/p>\n<p>Other types of arthritis include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" arthritis<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Ankylosing spondylitis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Arthritis can be the leading cause of a range of\u00a0 eye conditions that can impact vision and even result in permanent vision loss.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Dry eye syndrome<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/what-is-dry-eye-syndrome\/\">Dry eye syndrome<\/a> occurs when the quality or quantity of the tears is diminished.<\/p>\n<p>The tear film is responsible for ocular lubrication and protecting the eye from foreign particles, making the tear layer necessary for clear and comfortable vision.<\/p>\n<p><b>If left untreated, severe dry eye can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/eye-conditions\/corneal-diseases\/what-is-a-corneal-abrasion\/\">corneal scarring and infection<\/a>, as well as other complications<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren\u2019s syndrome are the two primary types of arthritis that can lead to dry eye syndrome.<\/p>\n<p><b>Dry eye from RA affects women up to 9 times more than men.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of dry eye syndrome:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Dry eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Blurred vision<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Red eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Eyes feel scratchy or irritated<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Foreign body sensation in the eyes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Scleritis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Rheumatoid arthritis can lead to thinning of the sclera, the white part of the eye, or the cornea.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of scleritis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Severe eye pain<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Ocular redness that doesn\u2019t subside with eye drops<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Light sensitivity<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Blurred vision<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Uveitis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>This condition occurs when the uvea, the vascular layer of the eye located between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-health\/how-does-the-eye-work\/eye-anatomy-the-back-of-the-eye\/\">retina<\/a> and sclera, becomes inflamed. \u202fIf left untreated, uveitis can lead to vision loss.<\/p>\n<p>Uveitis is most commonly caused by\u202fjuvenile arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and Beh\u00e7et\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>Uveitis symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Ocular Pain<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" stroke\u2019<\/a>, occurs when the arteries or blood vessels of the retina become blocked or backed up as a result of inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>The vision loss associated with RVO is dependent on whether the artery is fully blocked or only\u00a0 backed up.<\/p>\n<p>RVOs can also be present in those with scleroderma, lupus, sarcoidosis, Beh\u00e7et\u2019s disease, polyarteritis nodosa and primary CNS angiitis.<\/p>\n<p>RVO symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Sudden vision loss<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Occasional vision loss<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Gradual vision loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Glaucoma<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/glaucoma-guide\/glaucoma-myths-and-facts\/\">Glaucoma<\/a> causes optic nerve damage and permanent vision loss.<\/p>\n<p>This eye condition commonly develops as a result of increased eye pressure. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-exams\/why-is-eye-pressure-important\/\">High eye pressure<\/a> occurs when the fluid within the eye cannot drain properly, sometimes as a result of inflammation of the valve responsible for fluid drainage out of the eye.<\/p>\n<p><b>Glaucoma can also develop when corticosteroids are used to treat arthritis<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The most common types of arthritis that lead to glaucoma are ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, along with other forms of inflammatory arthritis.<\/p>\n<p>Glaucoma symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Pain<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Blurred vision<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Blind spots<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Halos around bright lights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: Symptoms are generally not noticed in the early stages of glaucoma.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Cataracts\u202f<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/guide-to-cataracts\/cataract-faqs\/\">cataract<\/a> is the clouding of the eyes&#8217; naturally transparent lens.<\/p>\n<p>The most common types of arthritis that leads to the development of a cataract include RA, ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cataracts can also develop as a
