{"id":17803,"date":"2021-10-05T07:21:18","date_gmt":"2021-10-05T07:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/?page_id=17803"},"modified":"2021-10-05T07:21:18","modified_gmt":"2021-10-05T07:21:18","slug":"eyelid-hygiene-why-is-it-important","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/eye-conditions\/eyelid-hygiene-why-is-it-important\/","title":{"rendered":"Eyelid Hygiene: Why is it Important?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Eyelids are essential for comfortable eyes and clear vision.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Eyelids contain the thinnest skin on the body, being made of intricate layers of skin, muscle, tissue, fat and glands.<\/p>\n<p><b>Understanding our eyelids<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When you blink, your eyelids move across the eye, but they are more than just human \u2018windshield wipers\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Eyelids shield your eyes from dirt and other contaminants and block light to help you sleep comfortably\u2014but they also contain tiny glands that secrete oils in the tears.<\/p>\n<p><b>Eyelids help to keep the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-health\/how-does-the-eye-work\/ocular-anatomy-the-front-of-the-eye\/\">cornea<\/a> moist by producing essential oils for your tears.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When you blink or close your eyes, the tear film, a lubricant and antibacterial secretion produced by the lacrimal glands, is dispersed across the surface of the cornea, preventing it from drying out.<\/p>\n<p>The blink also squeezes the tiny glands in the eyelids to release fine oily droplets, from the meibomian glands.<\/p>\n<p>Eyelids are vulnerable to a variety of conditions due to their numerous layers and continual exposure to your surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>What most people are unaware of is how important it is to practice proper eyelid hygiene.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Proper eyelid hygiene<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Given the amount of dirt, pollution, debris, and foreign matter that accumulates on our eyelids and lashes on a daily basis, good eyelid care is essential.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Unless you thoroughly clean around your eye, all the dirt and debris will remain beneath the eyelid, where they become trapped.<\/p>\n<p>Eyelid hygiene is\u00a0 especially effective as a preventative measure. Someone who keeps their eyelids clean is protecting themselves from a variety of potentially serious eye conditions.<\/p>\n<p>There are two methods to clean your eyelids and lashes:<\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Eyelid scrub<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The eyelid scrub can be done at home with a washcloth or a purchased eye scrub product.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Before cleaning your eyelid, thoroughly wash your hands.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Use a prepared lid scrub solution advised by your optometrist or a mixture of warm water and a tiny bit of non-irritating shampoo ( such as baby shampoo).<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Close one eye and wipe the solution back and forth across the eyelashes and the edge of the eyelid with a clean washcloth (a separate one for each eye).<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Use clear cool water to rinse the scrub solution or shampoo.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Then repeat with the other eye.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>2. Blepharitis can be caused by a bacterial infection or other skin disorders such as rosacea. Among the signs and symptoms are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Crusted or falling eyelashes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Flaky skin around the eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Frequent blinking<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Greasy or swollen eyelids<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Red, watery eyes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Stye<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>One of the complications that might arise from blepharitis is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/eyelid-conditions\/what-is-a-stye\/\">stye<\/a>. A stye is a painful, red, pimple-like, pus-filled lump that usually appears on the edge of your eyelid, although it can also appear on the inside part of your eyelid. Other signs and symptoms could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Tearing<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Swelling of the eyelids<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Painful eyelids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is best to establish a comprehensive cleansing routine to prevent or at least lessen the frequency of certain eye conditions.
