{"id":19803,"date":"2021-10-27T11:23:07","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T11:23:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/?page_id=19803"},"modified":"2021-10-27T11:23:32","modified_gmt":"2021-10-27T11:23:32","slug":"19803-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-sports-vision\/vision-skills-for-sports\/19803-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Visuomotor Reaction Time for Elite Table Tennis Athletes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Research published in 2019 shows that an athlete\u2019s visuomotor reaction time (VMRT) is strongly dependent on their visual skills.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The research outlined below was published in the <i>Frontiers of Behavioral Neuroscience in July 2019<\/i>, conducted at\u00a0 the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, LUNEX International University of Health, Exercise and Sports, Differdange, Luxembourg.<\/p>\n<p><b>Participants<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The participants included 37 young elite international table tennis players (18 male, 19 female, mean age: 13.5 years) from 23 nations.<\/p>\n<p><b>Methods<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Two different motion velocity conditions were presented.<\/p>\n<p>The participants then performed a visuomotor reaction task in response to the visual motion stimuli presented.<\/p>\n<p>Visuomotor performance was evaluated by:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Measuring the electromyographic (EMG) onset as well as the VMRT.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Using a 64-channel electroencephalography (EEG) system to investigate the stimulus and response-locked event-related potentials (ERPs) in the brain\u2019s visual motion sensitive area as well as the supplementary motor cortex to identify the speed of cortical visual and motor information processing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Correlation and multiple regression analyses identified the neural processes to determine the visuomotor performance.<\/p>\n<p><b>To improve your reaction speed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/practice-search\/\">see a sports vision eye doctor near you.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>SEE RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-sports-vision\/vision-skills-for-sports\/5-tips-to-improve-your-game\/\">5 Tips to Improve your Game<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Results<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Results of these studies are summarized below.<\/p>\n<p>The VMRT (232 vs. 258 ms, <i>P<\/i> &lt; 0.001, <i>d<\/i> = \u22122.33) and EMG onset (181 vs. 206 ms, <i>P<\/i> &lt; 0.001, <i>d<\/i> = \u22122.14) were accelerated in the fast motion velocity condition which was accompanied by an earlier stimulus-locked N2 (187 vs. 193 ms, <i>P<\/i> &lt; 0.001, <i>d<\/i> = \u22120.80) and later response-locked N2-r (17 vs. \u22120.1 ms, <i>P<\/i> &lt; 0.001, <i>d<\/i> = 1.04).<\/p>\n<p>The N2 and N2-r latencies were correlated with EMG onset and VMRT in both velocity conditions and explained between 80% and 90% of the variance in visuomotor reaction speed.<\/p>\n<p><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The results validate our previous findings and support the importance of neural visual processes for the visuomotor reaction speed across different visuomotor demanding sports and age groups.<\/p>\n<p><b>This research suggests the visual system might be a promising target for specific visual diagnostics and training interventions.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>LEARN MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-sports-vision\/\">Guide to Sports Vision<\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/practice-search\/\">Schedule an eye exam with a sports vision eye doctor near you<\/a> and you may learn how to improve your reaction speed.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Research published in 2019 shows that an athlete\u2019s visuomotor reaction time (VMRT) is strongly dependent on their visual skills.
