A sore eye can generate a variety of symptoms which can help your eye doctor determine the source of your suffering and prescribe the most suitable treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Eye pain can present in several ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Dull ache<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Burning eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Light sensitivity<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Mild to severe eye irritation<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Eye redness or bloodshot eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Sharp, stabbing sensation<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Eye discomfort<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>10 causes of eye pain<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Sore eyes can result from a wide range of causes, some requiring immediate medical care and others only needing eye drops or a quick in-office treatment.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Seeing your eye doctor immediately after experiencing any pain in or around the eyes is essential for early diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Blepharitis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/eyelid-conditions\/do-i-have-blepharitis\/\">Blepharitis<\/a> is an inflammation of the eyelids. They may appear red, swollen, or have a burning or sore sensation.<\/p>\n<p>Blepharitis can occur suddenly with dull pain and ocular irritation and is often a result of a Dermodex mite infestation in the glands of your eyelids.<\/p>\n<p>Your eye doctor will be able to determine the best treatments, which can often improve your eye pain within a few hours or days.<\/p>\n<h2><b>2. Conjunctivitis (pink eye)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/conjunctivitis-and-eye-infections\/\">Conjunctivitis<\/a> is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear protective layer over the front of the eye.\u00a0This can be caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/a-guide-to-eye-infections\/pink-eye-or-allergies\/\">allergies<\/a> or infections, both viral or bacterial, and leads to enlarged blood vessels that give the appearance of pink eye.<\/p>\n<p>Pink eye can also cause your eyes to feel itchy and give off a yellow-green, sticky discharge.<\/p>\n<p>Conjunctivitis can be extremely contagious, so it&#8217;s vitally important to see your eye doctor upon the first signs of eye pain .<\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Corneal abrasions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/eye-conditions\/corneal-diseases\/what-is-a-corneal-abrasion\/\">Corneal abrasions<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/eye-conditions\/corneal-diseases\/corneal-scratch\/\">scratches on the eye\u2019s cornea<\/a> and are generally very painful.<\/p>\n<p>This can occur from sand or dust landing in your eye, or even an accidental scratch from a baby or pet.<\/p>\n<p>Your eye doctor will most likely prescribe antibiotics along with lubricating eye drops. Most corneal abrasions clear up in a few days with no further complications, but always need close observation from your eye doctor to ensure the eye is healing correctly.<\/p>\n<h2><b>4. Corneal infection (keratitis)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A bacterial or viral infection can result in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/eye-conditions\/corneal-diseases\/keratitis\/\">irritated or diseased cornea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The most common cause of corneal infections is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/optical\/guide-to-contact-lenses\/common-contact-lens-problems\/contact-lenses-what-can-go-wrong\/\">incorrect care of contact lenses.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Contact lens complications arise if you leave your contacts in your eyes overnight, use the wrong solutions, don\u2019t clean your hands or lenses correctly, or wear your lenses past their disposal dates.<\/p>\n<h2><b>5. Foreign bodies<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A foreign object in your eye, such as a speck of dirt, can irritate it or even lead to severe eye pain.<\/p>\n<p>If you notice a foreign body in your eyes, rinse your eye with artificial tears or clear tap water. Iritis or uveitis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Trauma, infections, or immune system disorders can cause inflammation inside your eye. Pain, red-eye, and blurred vision are common symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><b>Any pain that seems to come from inside the eye requires immediate medical attention.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>8.
