As we age, the gel turns into a liquid, causing the vitreous to slowly detach from the retina.<\/p>\n<p>This process, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/guide-to-retinal-diseases\/what-are-eye-flashes\/\">posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)<\/a>, is a natural part of the aging process and rarely causes any complications.<\/p>\n<p><b>However, a retinal tear can occur when the vitreous is \u2018extra sticky\u2019 and pulls on the retina or when it detaches
