They may have a vision problem.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>According to the American Optometric Association, 60% of the brain is dedicated to some function related to receiving, deciphering or interpreting visual information.<\/p>\n<p>This means that our sense of sight is by far the leading method of gathering information and learning about the world around us.<\/p>\n<p><b>It\u2019s no wonder then, that children who have vision problems are likely to have difficulties learning in school.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, when diagnosed and treated early, the negative effects of these conditions on your child\u2019s learning can be minimized or prevented altogether.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Vision problems and learning difficulties<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>In order for your child to have the proper vision for learning, their brain and eyes need to be able to work together efficiently and accurately<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>There are three broad categories of vision-related learning disorders:<\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Refractive problems<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>These are the issues parents most commonly think of when they consider whether their child\u2019s learning difficulties are related to vision.<\/p>\n<p>Refractive problems include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/what-is-myopia\/\">Myopia (nearsightedness)<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/what-is-long-sightedness\/\">Hyperopia (farsightedness)\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/what-is-astigmatism\/\">Astigmatism\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These conditions affect a child\u2019s ability to see clearly up close or at a distance.<\/p>\n<p>A child with refractive error may have trouble seeing the board at the front of the classroom, or experience blurry vision when reading up-close.<\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Functional vision problems<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Functional vision refers to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/guide-vision-and-learning-difficulties\/the-17-key-visual-skills\/\">visual skills<\/a> required for the eyes to work together to form a three-dimensional picture, keep images in focus as they come closer or move further away, track moving objects and more.<\/p>\n<p><b>Difficulties with visual skills cause symptoms such as blurred vision, headaches and eye strain, and can cause discomfort during reading and writing activities<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Visual perception problems<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Visual perceptual abilities describe the brain\u2019s ability to interpret the signals sent to it by the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>A child that has difficulty with suggest that their issues may be rooted in a vision problem.<\/p>\n<p>Common signs of vision-related learning issues:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Holding books very close to the face while reading<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Tilting of the head or closing one eye while attempting to read<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Shorter attention span or losing their place while reading texts<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Falling behind socially or academically compared to the rest of their class<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Eye strain with headaches<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Problems with development of eye-hand excessively<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>School vision screening or comprehensive eye exam?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>The first step to diagnosing vision issues that may be affecting your child\u2019s ability to learn is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/practice-search\/\">schedule a comprehensive eye exam<\/a>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>This is true even if your child has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/vision-therapy-for-children\/the-myth-of-20-20\/\">20\/20 vision<\/a> as determined by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/vision-for-school\/vision-screening-vs-eye-exam-whats-the-difference\/\">school vision screening.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>School vision screenings are not equipped to diagnose functional eye and visual perception disorders, and can only catch the most obvious cases of refractive error. These screenings would not be able to catch the vast majority of conditions that would impact a child\u2019s learning.<\/p>\n<p>During your child\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-childrens-eye-exams\/pediatric-eye-exams-2\/\">comprehensive eye exam<\/a>, your optometrist will run an extensive battery of tests to check basic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/guide-vision-and-learning-difficulties\/the-17-key-visual-skills\/\">vision skills<\/a> such as eye teaming, convergence and divergence, eye tracking and accommodation.
