It works by shrinking the oil glands in the skin to decrease oil production and unclog facial pores.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, when Accutane enters the bloodstream, it has the same oil-reducing effect all over the body, including the eyelids, and can result in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/\">dry eye<\/a> symptoms and severe ocular discomfort.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of dry eye<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Red eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Excessive tearing<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/conjunctivitis-and-eye-infections\/why-do-my-eyes-feel-gritty\/\">Gritty eyes<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Burning in the eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Irritated eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Light sensitivity<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Blurred vision<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Contact lens discomfort<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How does Accutane cause dry eyes?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>When the tiny meibomian glands that line the margin of the eyelids are impacted by the effects of Accutane, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/dry-eye\/eyelid-conditions\/meibomian-gland-dysfunction\/\">dry eye<\/a> can result<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The meibomian glands are responsible for secreting the oil that comprises part of the tear film. The oil layer is responsible for preventing excess tear evaporation and maintaining moisture in the tears.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Can Accutane cause other eye problems?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>A study published in <i>JAMA Dermatology<\/i> (2002) reported that Accutane significantly increases the risk of a range of ocular conditions, as a result of changes that occur in the eyelids, meibomian soon as possible<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Mild to moderate dry eye symptoms can often be treated with artificial tears lubricating eye drops, gels or ointments.<\/p>\n<p>If your symptoms are severe, your eye doctor may recommend consulting with your dermatologist to inquire about other acne medications that won\u2019t impact your eye health.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, dry eye symptoms from Accutane typically
