{"id":317,"date":"2020-03-11T10:14:49","date_gmt":"2020-03-11T10:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/wordpress\/?page_id=317"},"modified":"2021-07-15T12:16:40","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T12:16:40","slug":"advanced-diagnostics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-exams\/advanced-diagnostics\/","title":{"rendered":"Advanced Diagnostics"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Many ocular diseases develop without any noticeable symptoms.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advanced diagnostic equipment allows doctors to detect signs of ocular disease before symptoms are present \u2014preventing significant and permanent vision loss, and enabling early treatment to manage the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Corneal Mapping (Topography)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corneal Mapping, also known as Corneal Topography, is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that provides 3-D images of the cornea (the outer layer of the eye responsible for about 70% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the eye\u2019s focusing power). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The images provide details about the cornea\u2019s shape and curvature, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enable detection of irregular conditions.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corneal mapping is used to detect certain corneal diseases, abrasions, deformities, and irregular astigmatisms.\u00a0 Corneal mapping is also used to monitor and treat ocular conditions, plan eye surgery, and fit contact lenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The diagnostic test involves sitting in front of a lighted \u201cbowl\u201d and resting your head against a bar.\u00a0 After your data is collected, a color coded image of the corneal shape is generated, using different colors to differentiate elevations (similar to a topographic map of the earth that displays changes in the surface of the land).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Digital Retinal Imaging<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Retinal Imaging is a non-invasive, diagnostic tool that produces high resolution images of your retina, optic nerve, and other retinal structures at the back of your eye. It enables your doctor to measure the range of your peripheral vision, or detect any abnormalities in your visual field. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During an initial screening, you will be asked to describe what you see, while maintaining a fixed gaze on a central object, and covering one eye.\u00a0 During a more comprehensive assessment, you will look into a special machine and press a button when you see a flash of light. At different stages of the test, the lights are brighter or dimmer. Each eye is tested separately. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the test, your doctor will examine the map and determine any visual field disturbances.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>OPTOS Retinal Exam<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Optomap\u00ae Retinal Exam enables a wide view of the retina, producing a highly detailed image for early detection of ocular diseases (such as, macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the optomap\u00ae, your eye doctor can also detect signs of diabetes, hypertension, or other health related issues.\u00a0 During the optomap\u00ae retinal exam an image of your retina is captured, and immediately displayed on a computer screen.
