The disease affects performance of visual tasks that include fine details \u2014 reading, driving, recognizing faces, using a computer, watching TV, etc.<\/p>\n<p>It is crucial for AMD to be diagnosed and treated in its early stages to prevent severe vision loss and sometimes even blindness.<\/p>\n<p><b>Early signs of AMD include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurry vision<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cloudy vision<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark \u2018blind\u2019 spots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Signs of AMD in its advanced stages:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden, severe vision loss<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larger blind spots<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of central vision<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Types of Macular Degeneration (AMD)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/macular-degeneration-guide\/dry-macular-degeneration-amd\/\"><b>Dry macular degeneration<\/b><\/a> is the most common form, and can be detected during a routine eye exam. It is considered the less aggressive form of AMD since it progresses slowly over many years or decades, and the clarity of vision slowly decreases over this time. It can result from aging and thinning of the macula, pigment in the macula, or a combination of the two causes.\n<ul>\n<li><b>Dry AMD accounts for 80-90% of AMD cases.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/macular-degeneration-guide\/wet-macular-degeneration-amd\/\"><b>Wet macular degeneration<\/b><\/a> is the more severe form of AMD. Lutein and zeaxanthin are also effective for maintenance of retinal health, while beta-carotene is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer in smokers.<\/p>\n<p>With the results of AREDS2, it was proven that<strong> lutein and zeaxanthin reduced the risk of AMD progression by 19 percent, and of vision loss by 25 percent.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Currently, the AREDS and AREDS2 formulas are the only effective treatments for intermediate-to-severe dry AMD.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Dozens of \u201ceye vitamins\u201d and \u201cocular supplements\u201d containing the special formula of nutrients have become widely available.<\/p>\n<p><b>AREDS2 Formula<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500 mg vitamin C<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">400 IU vitamin E<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 mg lutein<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 mg zeaxanthin<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80 mg zinc<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 mg copper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>How is <em>wet<\/em> AMD treated?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Treatment of wet AMD involves stopping the development of new blood vessels, destroying existing blood cells, and preventing leakage into the macula.<\/p>\n<p><b>Treatment options for wet AMD include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/guide-to-diabetes-and-the-eyes\/how-is-diabetic-retinopathy-treated\/how-do-anti-vegf-injections-work\/\">Anti-VEGF treatment<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laser surgery<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photodynamic therapy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is anti-VEGF treatment?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a protein in your body that creates new blood vessels when your body needs them. If your body produces too much VEGF, <i>abnormal <\/i>blood vessels can grow in your eye. These abnormal blood vessels are dangerous to your eye health and vision\u2014 causing vision loss and even blindness.<\/p>\n<p>Anti-VEGF treatments block the VEGF from creating new blood vessels to reduce vision loss, or inhibit further damage caused by the abnormal blood vessels.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-VEGF medication is administered by your eye doctor. Your eye doctor will use an eye numbing agent to reduce pain during administration. A tiny needle will then be used to inject the medication into the white part of your eye (sclera)\u2014 this only takes a few seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Your doctor will advise how many treatments will be necessary for treatment of your individual case.<\/p>\n<h3><b>How effective is the treatment?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 in 10 people report stabilized vision<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 3 people report improved vision<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Types of anti-VEGF medications<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>All of the medications have been proven safe and effective in the treatment of AMD. Each medication works to block the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the back of the eye, but differ in the type of drug they use, as well is their cost.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Beovu <\/b>uses a drug called aflibercep.<\/li>\n<li><b>Avastin<\/b> uses a drug called bevacizumab.<\/li>\n<li><b>Lucentis<\/b> uses a drug called ranibizumab.<\/li>\n<li><b>Eylea<\/b> uses a drug called aflibercept.<\/li>\n<li><b>Mucugen<\/b> uses a drug called pegaptanib sodium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Laser <\/b><b>photocoagulation\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>This laser surgery seals off the leaking abnormal blood vessels, while preserving healthy ones. \u00a0This surgery will not restore any vision that has been lost, but can slow the progression of further vision loss.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Photodynamic therapy (PDT)\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>This treatment involves both a laser and a medicine called Visudyne dye, that is injected into a vein in your arm, and activated when exposed to light.<\/p>\n<p>PDT is usually performed in an eye doctor\u2019s office. Prior to the procedure, eye drops will be inserted into your eye to both dilate and numb your eye. After the Visudyne dye is injected, it travels through the bloodstream to the abnormal blood vessels under the retina. Using a special contact lens, your eye doctor will shine the laser into your eye, to activate the light-sensitive dye, causing it to seal off the abnormal blood vessels.<\/p>\n<p>Post-procedure, your eye may be sore and your vision blurry\u2014 your eye doctor may cover your eye temporarily.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, you may be required to repeat this procedure, since the effects of the laser are often short-term.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Low vision devices<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Although a treatment to fully regain vision loss from AMD has yet to be discovered, there are many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-low-vision\/low-vision\/guide-to-low-vision-magnifiers\/what-to-look-for-in-a-low-vision-magnifier-2\/\">low vision devices<\/a> (i.e. magnifiers, telescopes, and other aids) that can facilitate your ability to maintain independence.<\/p>\n<p>If you have been diagnosed with AMD, it is crucial that you continue to be monitored closely by your eye doctor.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Who is at risk for developing AMD?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Many times, in the early stages of macular degeneration, symptoms can go unnoticed.
