It usually develops on the side of the eye near your nose, but can grow on the other side too. A pinguecula is usually small in size but can grow larger over time\u2014 though this is rare.<\/p>\n<p>It can develop at any age, but tends to be more common in middle aged adults.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What causes a pinguecula to develop?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/guide-to-corneal-diseases\/what-is-a-pinguecula\/\">pinguecula occurs<\/a> when deposits containing protein, fat and\/or calcium, form on the tissue of the conjunctiva.<\/p>\n<p>The exact cause of pinguecula has yet to be discovered, but there is a correlation between excessive unprotected exposure to sunlight, wind, dryness and dust.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of pinguecula<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A pinguecula may not cause any symptoms, or may cause the following <b>mild <\/b>symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dryness<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritation<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foreign body sensation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In more severe cases, you may experience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itching<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redness<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soreness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How is a pinguecula treated?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>In most cases, no treatment is necessary\u2014 other than to protect your eye from overexposure to the sun and other harmful elements.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>However, if the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/guide-to-corneal-diseases\/what-is-a-pinguecula\/\">pinguecula is causing discomfort<\/a>, there are treatments available to alleviate your symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/dry-eye\/guide-to-eye-drops\/\"><b>Eye drops or ointments <\/b><\/a>can help to relieve dryness, irritation and itching.<\/p>\n<p><b>Steroid eye drops<\/b> <b>with anti-inflammatory medication<\/b> may be prescribed for swelling.<\/p>\n<p>In rare cases, surgery to remove the growth may be pink sometimes, though it typically has a white flesh-colored appearance, with a round, oval, or anvil shape.<\/p>\n<p>A pterygium may develop in one or both eyes, and typically grows in the corner of the eye\u2014 near the nose and toward the cornea. A pterygium develops on the surface of the cornea, and is more likely to grow over the cornea than a pinguecula.<\/p>\n<p>A pterygium often starts out as a pinguecula, until it begins to grow over the cornea. It is also more visible than a pinguecula.<\/p>\n<p><b>A <\/b><b>pterygium<\/b><b> may remain small in size, or grow large enough to cover part of the cornea\u2014 leading to\u00a0 vision problems.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What causes a pterygium to develop?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Similar to a pinguecula, a pterygium (plural pterygia) is believed to be caused by prolonged unprotected exposure to UV rays from the sun, and are sometimes called \u201csurfer\u2019s eye\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><b>They are most common in middle-aged adults between ages 20 to 50, who live in sunny, dry climates and spend a significant amount of time outdoors.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of pterygium<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>In most cases, there are no symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>However, some people may experience mild symptoms similar to those of a pinguecula:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redness<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritation<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foreign body sensation<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact lens discomfort<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>In severe cases, the pterygium may grow far enough into the cornea and obstruct vision, or cause the cornea to change shape\u2014 resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/what-is-astigmatism\/\">astigmatism<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>How is a pterygium treated?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>If necessary, treatment for symptoms of a pterygium may be similar to those used for pinguecula\u2014 lubricating or steroidal eye drops or ointments.<\/p>\n<p><b>Surgery is more common for a pterygium because of its potential for vision changes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Surgery will be recommended when a pterygium is causing vision loss or an astigmatism, which can cause blurry vision. Your eye doctor may also recommend surgery to remove the pterygium if eye drops or ointments are not providing relief of your symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Some patients may opt for surgery for cosmetic reasons.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, a conjunctival graft is performed to prevent recurrence\u2014 which can happen. During this procedure, a small piece of tissue is grafted onto the area where the pterygium was removed.<\/p>\n<h2><b>How are these conditions diagnosed?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Your eye doctor can diagnose these conditions through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/comprehensive-eye-exams\/\">comprehensive examination<\/a>, using a slit lamp.
