It is often accompanied by blurred vision, blind spots or tunnel vision\u2014 and may also be called <em>legal blindness<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Low vision may prevent you from driving, watching TV, reading, using a computer or participating in your favorite hobbies.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Low vision usually affects older adults, as it is generally caused by ocular diseases that are more common in older adults.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>1 in 6 adults over age 45 has low vision.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>1 in 4 adults over age 75 has low vision.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Low vision truly affects the lives of those who suffer from the condition.<\/p>\n<p>Many people with low vision have difficulty with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Driving<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facial recognition<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Color vision<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing the TV or computer screen clearly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p>Many people with low vision are unable to earn a living, or find it a constant struggle.<\/p>\n<p><b>In 2010, only 37.2 percent of visually disabled Americans, ages 21-64, were included as part of the workforce.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of low vision<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Low vision may cause the following symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Loss of central vision<\/li>\n<li>Loss of peripheral vision<\/li>\n<li>Night blindness<\/li>\n<li>Hazy vision<\/li>\n<li>Blurred vision<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What causes low vision?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>While low vision can be hereditary, or may be caused by an eye injury, the most common cause of low vision is ocular disease.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Poor vision that cannot be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses should be evaluated by an eye doctor to rule out the presence of ocular disease.<\/p>\n<p>These are the most common eye diseases that cause low vision:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/guide-to-cataracts\/cataracts\/\"><b>Cataracts<\/b> <\/a>cause hazy, blurry vision.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/macular-degeneration-guide\/macular-degeneration\/\"><b>Macular degeneration <\/b><\/a>causes blurred or partially obscured central vision.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/guide-to-diabetes-and-the-eyes\/diabetic-retinopathy\/\"><b>Diabetic retinopathy<\/b><\/a> causes blind spots, blurriness and visual distortions.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/glaucoma-guide\/glaucoma\/\"><b>Glaucoma<\/b> <\/a>causes poor peripheral vision.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/retinal-diseases\/\"><b>Retinitis pigmentosa<\/b><\/a> causes poor peripheral and night vision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Increased light sensitivity and loss of color contrast can also result from these ocular diseases.<\/p>\n<h2><b>How is low vision diagnosed?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Low vision is diagnosed through a dilated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/comprehensive-eye-exams\/\">eye exam<\/a>. Your eye doctor will test your near, distant, central and peripheral vision. This device offers increased magnification together with a specialized head piece to secure the lenses in front of your eyes.<\/p>\n<p><b>2. Handheld magnifiers<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This low vision aid is useful for on-the-go, as it\u2019s small size is designed to fit comfortably in your hand.<\/p>\n<p>This device offers multiple magnification strengths, and is easy to use. It is available in different sizes, weights, and features. The handheld magnifier can function as a traditional magnifying glass for reading a label on a bottle, or as an advanced electronic magnifier\u2014 which is more appropriate for extended use, such as when reading a book or magazine.<\/p>\n<p>More advanced electronic handheld magnifiers often provide options for both handheld and surface resting modes. These advanced devices offer lighting and magnification adjustments for reading, the ability to capture an image or freeze the screen, and color\/contrast settings.<\/p>\n<p>Both traditional and electronic handheld magnifiers can provide excellent assistance for usage at home and on-the-go.<\/p>\n<p><b>3.
