Children with CI must use additional effort to focus on reading, and other near vision tasks, in order to maintain focus for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n<p><i>With CI, near vision tasks can become quite challenging\u2014 specifically <\/i>affecting<i> reading, learning, sports performance and even attention.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>Q2: How common is CI?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy-for-children\/convergence-insufficiency-2\/\">Convergence insufficiency<\/a> affects up to 1 in every 8 children, and approximately 13 percent of <i>all school-aged students<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, many children with CI go undetected, and are incorrectly labeled as lazy, spacey, clumsy, anxious\u2014\u00a0 or even misdiagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, or mild autism.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Q3: What are the symptoms of CI?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A: The most common symptoms of CI include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eyestrain<\/li>\n<li>Headaches or muscle over-reliance on school vision screenings, and brief eye exams conducted by pediatricians.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This means that many children are not even evaluated for CI, and therefore cannot receive the help they need.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, these children begin to avoid reading and other near vision tasks as much as possible, or use various strategies to combat their discomfort, such as using a ruler or finger while reading, or taking frequent breaks from an activity.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Q7: Can CI cause other vision problems?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A: Yes.<\/p>\n<p><b>If untreated, CI can lead to more serious eye problems such as lazy eye (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy-for-lazy-eye\/amblyopia-lazy-eye\/\">amblyopia<\/a>) or an eye turn (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/a-guide-to-eye-turns\/strabismus-crossed-eyes\/\">strabismus<\/a>).<\/b><\/p>\n<p>These more serious problems can arise when CI is not treated properly, and a condition called <i>suppression <\/i>develops. Suppression of vision occurs when the brain actively \u201cshuts off\u201d one eye, causing loss of binocular (two-eyed) vision and depth perception.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Q8: What will happen if my child develops suppression?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A: With suppression, some or all of the following symptoms may present:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty catching balls<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoidance of sports<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clumsiness:\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trips on uneven surfaces, stairs, and curbs<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequently spills or knocks over objects<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bumps into doors, furniture and other stationary objects<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sports accidents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor eye contact<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor posture during near vision tasks<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent head tilt<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motion sickness and\/or vertigo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Q9: What is the best treatment for CI?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>A: Vision therapy is the most effective treatment for CI.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-for-school\/convergence-insufficiency-treatment-trial\/\">Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial<\/a>, conducted by the National Eye Institute, concluded that supervised vision therapy with home reinforcement is the most effective treatment for CI.<\/p>\n<p><em>According to the research, 75 percent of all children that participated in the study achieved either full correction of their vision, or noticed significant improvements within 12 weeks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In some cases, prism eyeglasses can be prescribed to decrease some of the symptoms associated with CI.
