If you are seeing one object as two separate or overlapping images, you are experiencing double vision.<\/p>\n<p>Double vision can be temporary or long lasting. There are three different types of diplopia:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Horizontal diplopia <\/b>occurs when the two images are seen side by side.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Vertical diplopia <\/b>occurs when one image appears higher than the other.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Monocular diplopia <\/b>occurs in only one eye, and is noticed when the other eye is closed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why am I seeing double?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Each eye creates an image that is sent to the brain for interpretation. The brain processes the visual information from each eye and combines them to produce a clear, single image. When a problem arises within this process, the brain cannot accurately interpret the two visual signals, and a double image can result.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What causes binocular double vision?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/a-guide-to-eye-turns\/strabismus-crossed-eyes\/\">Strabismus<\/a>, or an eye turn, is the most common cause of double vision, especially among children.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Strabismus occurs when the eyes are not aligned properly and one eye turns in a different direction, resulting in two different images of the same object.<\/p>\n<p>While this condition can cause double vision, it doesn\u2019t always. In many cases of strabismus, suppression will occur, in which the brain will actively shut off the affected eye to avoid double vision. If strabismus is left untreated, permanent vision loss can occur in the suppressed eye.<\/p>\n<p><b>Convergence insufficiency (CI) is another common vision condition that can lead to double vision.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy-for-children\/convergence-insufficiency-2\/\">Convergence insufficiency<\/a> occurs when the eyes are unable to work together to focus on an object, for clear, single vision. The double vision caused by CI is usually only noticed during times of excessive fatigue or stress.<\/p>\n<p>Double vision may also be caused by any of the following conditions that can affect the nerves or ocular muscles that control eye movement:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stroke<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/neuro-optometry\/5-essential-tbi-facts-you-may-not-know\/\">Traumatic brain injury<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brain swelling<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brain tumor<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brain aneurysm<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LASIK, PRK, or any other type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/optical\/laser-refractive-surgery\/\">refractive surgery\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cranial nerve palsy<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thyroid dysfunction<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myasthenia gravis<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple sclerosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p><b>Seek emergency medical attention for any type of double vision, to rule out a serious health problem that may be causing your distorted vision.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Never ignore any type of double vision, especially if it comes on suddenly and goes away on its own for a while\u2014 this may be the brain suppressing the vision from one eye, and concealing a serious health problem.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What causes monocular double vision?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>While this type of double vision is less common than binocular double vision, it can still occur as a result of the following conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/what-is-astigmatism\/\">Astigmatism<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/categories\/dry-eyes\/\">Dry eye<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-conditions\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/corneal-diseases\/keratoconus\/\">Keratoconus<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/a-guide-to-eye-infections\/children-and-eye-emergencies\/what-to-do-for-a-black-eye\/\">Black excessive alcohol consumption, extreme fatigue, or certain drugs, such as benzodiazepines, opioids, or medications for seizures and epilepsy.<\/p>\n<p>Head injuries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/neuro-optometry\/vision-and-brain-injuries\/traumatic-brain-injury-and-neuro-optometry\/5-essential-tbi-facts-you-may-not-know\/concussion-and-vision\/\">concussions<\/a>
