During menopause, the body produces less androgen, estrogen and progesterone, causing a variety of uncomfortable symptoms\u2014 hot flashes, sweating, insomnia, and even depression.<\/p>\n<p><b>Among these physical symptoms, menopause can also cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/categories\/dry-eyes\/\">dry eyes.<\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of dry eyes<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning in the eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gritty feeling in eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive tearing<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foreign body sensation<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurred vision<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Biological changes that can affect your eyes\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>During menopause, the androgen hormone decreases, affecting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/dry-eye\/meibomian-gland-dysfunction\/\">meibomian<\/a> and lacrimal glands in the eyelids.<\/p>\n<p>When these oil and fluid producing glands are affected, the eyelids can become inflamed, reducing tear production and tear quality\u2014 consequently leading to dry eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Some researchers believe that changes in estrogen levels are also linked to dry eye. This may be the reason for an increase in dry eye symptoms during certain times of your monthly cycle, or while taking birth control pills.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Hormone replacement therapy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Hormone replacement therapy is prescribed for the treatment of many uncomfortable menopausal symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Since hormone changes during menopause are associated with vision changes and ocular disease, your eye doctor may recommend hormone therapy to restore your estrogen levels.<\/p>\n<p>However, while restoring estrogen levels may reduce the risk of eye disease, patients who undergo hormone therapy are four to seven times more likely to develop dry eye symptoms.<\/p>\n<h2><b>The effects of dry eyes<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Eye allergies. <\/b>Increased dryness may lead to increased eye allergies\u2014 with less tears to flush the allergens away from the eyes, allergy symptoms may worsen.<\/p>\n<p><b>Contact lenses. <\/b>Wearing contact lenses can become uncomfortable with dry, itchy, sore eyes.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sj\u00f6gren\u2019s syndrome.<\/b> When symptoms are severe, it may be a sign of Sj\u00f6gren\u2019s syndrome, a systemic disease that causes dry style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practicing yoga and mindful breathing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Environmental changes to help prevent dry eye<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Making lifestyle changes can help to reduce dry eye irritants and prevent worsening of symptoms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Lower your computer screen:<\/b> If your eyelids are lower, and your eyes are less open during prolonged computer use, you can reduce the surface area from which the tears evaporate.<\/li>\n<li><b>Remove drafts:<\/b> Avoid using a ceiling fan while you sleep, and turn air vents away from your face.<\/li>\n<li><b>Wear wraparound
