As toddlers, they are enthusiastic and love to learn. Just watch a two-year old\u00a0 discover everything in the cupboard\u2014 he will excitedly pull things apart, while laughing and questioning.<\/p>\n<p>The word visualization conjures up many images and meanings for people. Visualization is defined in numerous ways, depending on the person, the type of discussion and situation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Visualization may be defined as:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Utilizing visual mental imagery or picturing in your \u201cmind\u2019s eye\u201d.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Utilizing the five senses to manipulate a mental image: Sight, sound, touch, smell and taste.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here is my definition of visualization:<\/p>\n<p><i>The ability to imagine, sense, become aware of, move, manipulate and expand the pictures in your \u201cmind\u2019s eye\u201d and the feelings or senses in your body, thereby developing new perspectives and creativity. Visualization is the \u201cknowing,\u201d or \u201cI got it,\u201d or \u201cgut feeling,\u201d through the orchestration of your senses.<\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>How do good readers use visualization?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Good readers often report that they \u201csee movies in their head\u201d when they read \u2014 these readers are actually visualizing the story as it unfolds. Sometimes they can even see themselves in the story.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Children who don\u2019t like to read, rarely experience seeing movies in their head, and instead experience difficulty imagining the story or seeing themselves in it.<\/p>\n<p>When a child says that reading is \u201cboring,\u201d trust him, it is. Letters and print are boring to him. Nothing has sparked his imagination\u2026 yet.<\/p>\n<h2><b>How does poor visualization affect a child?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>When a child\u00a0 who struggles in reading undertakes the reading experience, he spends most of his time figuring out what the words are. He doesn\u2019t even get a chance to fall into the story, much less visualize what\u2019s going on or what could happen.<\/p>\n<p><b>If reading becomes a challenge and non-enjoyable, your child will most likely resist reading, and avoid any homework requiring it.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>How can parents help?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i>As a parent, it is important to notice your child\u2019s frustration\u2014<\/i> though it is often masked by avoidance behaviors. Once you understand that your child is struggling to read and not just simply avoiding the task, you can use visualization to help them achieve greater success in their:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic performance: Reading, creative writing, spelling, math, homework, and test-preparation<\/li>\n<li>Sports performance<\/li>\n<li>Personal development: Stress management, handling fears, dealing with bullies, and building self-confidence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Who can visualize for success?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Everyone!\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Picture yourself on your dream vacation:<\/p>\n<p>Are you lying on a white sandy beach, cruising through the Greek Isles, watching the sun set over a calm lake or sitting in Fenway Park watching the Red Sox beat the Yankees?<\/p>\n<p><b>In order to imagine your dream vacation, you need to tap into your visualization skills.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Vision therapy for visualization<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Visualization skills develop just as coordination and cognitive skills develop.<\/p>\n<p><i>Visualization skills can also be taught as part of a comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/what-is-vision-therapy\/\">vision therapy program.<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>To learn more about visualization, check out my book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lynnhellerstein.com\/shop\/see-it-say-it-do-it-autographed-book\/\"><i>See It.
