When the blood supply is cut off and can no longer reach a specific body part, a stroke can occur\u2014 leading to significant damage to that body part.<\/p>\n<p><b>When a stroke occurs in the eye, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-anatomy-the-back-of-the-eye\/\">retina<\/a> is primarily affected.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The retina is the light-sensitive tissue in the back of the eye that transfers visual information to your brain for interpretation and processing. This enables you to see images clearly.<\/p>\n<h2><b>How does an eye stroke affect vision?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The blood vessels in the eye that enter the retina via the optic nerve are called the \u2018central\u2019 blood vessels. As these blood vessels branch out into smaller blood vessels, they are referred to as \u2018branch\u2019 blood vessels.<\/p>\n<p>When the central or branch blood vessels in your retina become blocked, fluid can leak into the retina and cause swelling. This retinal inflammation is what ultimately impacts your ability to see.<\/p>\n<p>There are different types of eye strokes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO)<\/b> occurs when the blockage is located in the retina\u2019s central artery.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO)<\/b> occurs when the blockage is located within the retina\u2019s smaller branch arteries.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO)<\/b> occurs when the blockage is located in the main central retinal vein.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) <\/b>occurs when the blockage is located within one of the smaller retinal branch veins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<h2><b>Am I having an eye stroke?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Eye stroke symptoms can come on suddenly, or develop gradually over the course of a few hours or even days.<\/p>\n<p>Prompt treatment is essential in order to prevent permanent vision loss.<\/p>\n<p><b>Symptoms<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grey spots or floaters in your visual field<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye pressure<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurry vision that gets progressively worse<\/li>\n<li eye.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Risk factors<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>While it isn\u2019t always possible to determine the cause of an eye stroke, researchers believe that certain factors and health conditions can increase your risk.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Older age: Above age 60<\/li>\n<li>Gender: Male<\/li>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n<li><a
