Preeclampsia<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Preeclampsia is a serious condition that can develop when the mother\u2019s blood pressure rises to dangerously high levels.\u00a0 This condition requires immediate medical attention, as it can put both the lives of the mother and baby in danger.<\/p>\n<p><b>Preeclampsia affects around five percent of expectant women.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The two primary symptoms of preeclampsia include a new-onset of high blood pressure (hypertension) and excess protein in the urine (proteinuria).<\/p>\n<p><b>Approximately 25 percent of women with severe preeclampsia experience visual symptoms.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Vision changes from preeclampsia usually worsen as the condition becomes more severe, and typically include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Blurred vision<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Dark spots or floaters in visual field<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Flashing lights<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Sudden difficulty focusing eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Temporary blindness<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Swelling around eyes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Preeclampsia can also lead to retinal swelling and bleeding which can threaten vision loss, if not treated properly.<\/p>\n<h2><b>2. Gestational diabetes\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Gestational diabetes<\/b> <b>is a temporary condition that can develop during pregnancy and cause blurry vision.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/guide-to-diabetes-and-the-eyes\/diabetes-and-eye-health-8-faqs\/\">Diabetes<\/a> can occur when there is a high concentration of glucose levels in the bloodstream. If it falls too low, blurry vision, with an increased risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/guide-to-retinal-diseases\/retinal-detachment\/\">retinal detachment<\/a> can occur.<\/p>\n<p>Pregnancy can also cause your eye pressure to increase as a result of fluid retention. Eye pressure that rises too high can increase your risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-conditions\/glaucoma-guide\/\">glaucoma<\/a><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>4. Worsening dry eye<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The hormonal changes that take place during pregnancy can negatively impact tear production.
