Scleral lenses are designed to vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera, the white part of the eye.<\/p>\n<p><b>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/optical\/guide-to-contact-lenses\/what-are-scleral-lenses\/\">scleral lenses do not come in contact with the cornea<\/a>, these contact lenses are more comfortable for patients with corneal irregularities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/dry-eye\/what-is-dry-eye-syndrome\/\">dry eye syndrome<\/a>, and other eye conditions that make it difficult to wear traditional contact lenses.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Moreover, prior to insertion, fresh saline solution is applied to the \u201cbowl\u201d of the scleral lens. Complete healing from a corneal transplant can sometimes take up to a year, and during this time your cornea may be extra sensitive.\u00a0 To protect your cornea while it heals, your eye doctor may recommend wearing scleral lenses.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, wearing scleral lenses may even help to eliminate the need for a corneal transplant. Like any other surgical procedure, a corneal transplant comes with risks of potential complications\u2014 not to mention a long recovery period.<\/p>\n<p>Ask your eye doctor if scleral lens wear can eliminate your need for a corneal transplant.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Eye allergies<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>If your eyes are constantly red, itchy, watery, and sore, you may have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/dry-eye\/allergies\/\">eye allergies.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eye allergies can make regular contact lens wear quite uncomfortable.
