school data in the USA now shows that up to 14 percent of all public school students ages 3 to 21 receive special education services\u2014 but this statistic doesn\u2019t even account for <i>all <\/i>children with special needs, as many are educated privately.<\/p>\n<p>Among the special education population is a wide range of special needs that can generally be divided into four categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Developmental <\/b>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy-for-special-needs\/vision-and-down-syndrome\/\">Down syndrome<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy-for-special-needs\/autism-vision\/\">autism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/vision-for-school\/dyslexia\/dyslexia-faqs\/\">dyslexia<\/a>, and processing disorders<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Behavioral\/Emotional<\/b> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy-for-adhd\/adhd-faqs\/\">ADHD<\/a>, mental health, or oppositional defiant disorder<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Physical <\/b>\u2014 Muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, chronic asthma, and epilepsy<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Sensory Impaired<\/b> \u2014 Blind, visually impaired, deaf, or hearing-impaired<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Vision conditions and special needs\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><em>Did you know that 35 areas of the brain are involved with visual information processing\u2014 and up to 80 percent of the sensory information that arrives to the brain is through the visual system? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>This infers that a deficit in any area of the visual system can create significant challenges for a child.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/guide-vision-and-learning-difficulties\/vision-and-learning-difficulties-faqs\/\"><strong>Up to 25 percent of all children struggle with reading and learning problems<\/strong> <strong>because of undiagnosed vision conditions.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, research also shows that an even higher percentage of <i>children with<\/i> <i>special needs<\/i> may have vision problems that are undiagnosed because their associative behaviors are perceived as part of their special needs diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>It is therefore crucial for parents and caregivers to understand the importance of bringing a child with special needs for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/pediatric-eye-exams-2\/\">eye exams<\/a> to comprehensively assess both their vision and the functioning of the visual system.<\/p>\n<p>In actuality, children with special needs tend to have higher incidences of the same vision problems that
