{"id":9511,"date":"2021-01-17T14:46:31","date_gmt":"2021-01-17T14:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/?page_id=9511"},"modified":"2021-08-11T10:08:00","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T10:08:00","slug":"how-to-improve-your-childs-reading-skills","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-childrens-eye-exams\/how-to-improve-your-childs-reading-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Improve Your Child\u2019s Reading Skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Since 80 percent of all that is learned enters through the visual pathways, any type of visual problem can prevent a child from achieving academic success.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>If your child struggles to read, they may have an undetected visual problem.<\/p>\n<p>Reading fluency and comprehension is dependent on the strength of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/the-17-key-visual-skills\/\">visual skills<\/a>\u2014 specifically, binocular vision, saccades, accommodation, visual fixation, and convergence.<\/p>\n<p>A deficiency in any of these visual skills can result in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/guide-vision-and-learning-difficulties\/vision-and-learning-difficulties-faqs\/\">reading difficulties<\/a>, which can consequently impact a child\u2019s ability to learn.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the difference between sight and vision?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-exams\/eye-exams\/what-is-a-visual-acuity-test\/\">Visual acuity<\/a> is tested using a standardized chart during a school vision screening or a routine eye exam\u2014 this is an indication of your \u2018sight\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><b>Your <\/b><b>visual acuity is only the measurement of how clearly you are able to see distant objects.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The results of a visual acuity test are indicated by a numeric fraction, such as 20\/20 or 20\/40. The top number represents the distance from the chart (20 feet), and the bottom number represents the distance at which the average person with normal eyesight can correctly read the same line.<\/p>\n<p>If you have 20\/20 eyesight, you can assume that you have normal visual acuity, and are able to see what most people can see when they stand 20 feet away from an object.<\/p>\n<p><b>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy-for-children\/the-myth-of-20-20\/\">having 20\/20 eyesight doesn\u2019t indicate perfect vision<\/a>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you have 20\/20 vision, this number is only a measurement of your <i>distance <\/i>vision acuity, and does not represent your <i>near <\/i>vision acuity, or the integrity of your visual skills.<\/p>\n<p><b>Children may have 20\/20 eyesight, with or without prescription glasses, and still experience reading and learning difficulties\u2014 usually as a result of reduced visual skills.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Which visual skills are necessary for reading?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Visual fixation-<\/b> the eye&#8217;s ability to accurately focus on a target image, such as a word on a page.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Accommodation- <\/b>the eyes\u2019 ability to switch focus between two distances while maintaining clear vision.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Binocular fusion-<\/b> the brain\u2019s ability to form a single image using the distinct visual information it receives from each eye.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Saccades- <\/b>rapid eye movements between two or more focus points, such as when the eyes move from one word to the next when reading a sentence across a page.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Convergence- <\/b>the eyes\u2019 ability to maintain a single image by simultaneously turning inward to focus on a near object, such as a book or
