This small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/eye-anatomy-external-parts-of-the-eye\/\">external eye muscle<\/a> attaches to the outer side of your eye and turns your eye outward, away from your nose.<\/p>\n<p><b>When the sixth cranial nerve becomes damaged, it prevents the lateral rectus muscle from contracting and results in an inward eye turn (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/a-guide-to-eye-turns\/esotropia-inward-eye-turn\/\">esotropia<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/neuro-optometry\/vision-and-brain-injuries\/double-vision-diplopia\/\">double vision<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What causes sixth nerve palsy?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Sixth nerve palsy is generally diagnosed in adults above the age of 70, when diabetes (23%) and hypertension (20%) are most prevalent. Sixth nerve palsy can also be present at birth, or result from trauma or medical condition. Isolated sixth nerve palsy<\/b> occurs without any additional symptoms, usually as a result of any of the following conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Injury<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Viral illness<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Hypertension<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Diabetes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>2. Non-isolated sixth nerve palsy<\/b> occurs when additional symptoms appear as well, including any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/eye-conditions\/ptosis-why-is-my-eyelid-drooping\/\">Eyelid droop<\/a> (ptosis)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Fever<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Headache<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Nausea and vomiting<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Hearing loss<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Facial weakness<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Decreased facial sensation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How is sixth nerve palsy diagnosed?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>To obtain a diagnosis of sixth nerve palsy, your doctor will conduct a thorough medical history, and a physical and neurological exam. If your doctor suspects sixth nerve palsy, you will be referred to an eye doctor for further testing.<\/p>\n<p>Brain imaging and blood tests may be required as well, to rule out a range of possible conditions that may be causing your symptoms.<\/p>\n<h2><b>How is sixth nerve palsy treated?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Treatment of sixth nerve palsy will depend on its underlying cause, but may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/vision-therapy-faqs\/\">Vision therapy<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/general-practice-optometry\/guide-to-eye-health\/can-corticosteroids-affect-vision\/\">Corticosteroids<\/a> to reduce inflammation<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Surgery or chemotherapy to eliminate a tumor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Vision therapy is an effective treatment option for some patients with acquired sixth nerve palsy, as it can help to improve eye movements and reduce or even eliminate double vision.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In some cases, there may not be a specific treatment for the underlying cause.
