{"id":9607,"date":"2021-01-23T20:59:12","date_gmt":"2021-01-23T20:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/?page_id=9607"},"modified":"2021-07-26T08:51:11","modified_gmt":"2021-07-26T08:51:11","slug":"menieres-disease","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/vision-therapy\/neuro-optometry\/vestibular-dysfunction\/menieres-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Meniere&#8217;s Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Meniere\u2019s disease affects 2 in 1000 adults and over 45,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.<\/b><\/h2>\n<h2><b>What is Meniere\u2019s disease?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Meniere\u2019s disease is an inner ear condition that causes a sudden onset of debilitating symptoms, including vertigo (spinning sensation), tinnitus (ringing in the ear) and inner ear pressure, and overtime can cause significant hearing loss.<\/p>\n<p><i>Disclaimer: The information on this page includes a brief overview of Meniere\u2019s disease, and is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to the causes, symptoms, or management of this condition.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>A Meniere\u2019s attack may occur several times a week, a few times a month, or in some cases, several times a year.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Symptoms of a Meniere\u2019s attack generally come on suddenly and can last anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours\u2014 sometimes even a full day<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the symptoms from an Meniere\u2019s attack are typically severe, no matter how long the symptoms last, it can take up to two days for you to recover from an attack, and you may experience increased fatigue or severe exhaustion for a few days.<\/p>\n<p><b>Meniere\u2019s disease generally affects one ear at first, but in 15 percent of people, the condition affects the other ear as well.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>The most common symptoms of a Meniere\u2019s attack include:<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Vertigo- feeling like the room is spinning around you<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/neuro-optometry\/vision-dizziness-and-imbalance\/\">Imbalance<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Nausea and vomiting<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Tinnitus- ringing, roaring or buzzing in your ear<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Hearing difficulty or hearing loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What causes Meniere\u2019s disease?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Scientists are still searching for the exact cause of Meniere\u2019s disease. However, while it is unclear what brings on this vestibular disorder, it is clear that this condition occurs when there is excess fluid and\/or pressure within the inner ear.<\/p>\n<p>Certain risk factors have also been associated with the onset of the disorder, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Family history of Meniere\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Poor inner ear fluid drainage<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Immune system disorder<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Allergies<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Meningitis<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/neuro-optometry\/headaches-and-migraines\/\">Migraines<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How is Meniere\u2019s disease diagnosed?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>If your primary care physician suspects that you may have Meniere\u2019s disease, you will be referred to an ear nose and throat (ENT) doctor for a proper diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to inform your ENT if anyone in your family has been diagnosed with Meniere\u2019s disease, as well as the frequency and severity of the symptoms you are experiencing.<\/p>\n<p>Your primary care physician may also recommend a series of blood tests to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, other conditions such as migraines, ear infections and vestibular labyrinthitis can mimic the symptoms of a However, there are medications that can help you to control your symptoms<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Most physicians will prescribe a medication to relieve severe nausea and vomiting, or an antihistamine to alleviate mild nausea and vertigo.<\/p>\n<p>For severe attacks, an injection of medication may be recommended to help you get the medication in your system even quicker.<\/p>\n<p><b>The key is to take the medication as soon as possible, as soon as you begin to feel the first symptoms of an attack.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Patients with severe vomiting may need to be admitted to the hospital for intravenous (IV) fluids and treatment for dehydration.<\/p>\n<p><b>Social-emotional support\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you have been diagnosed with Meniere\u2019s disease and are having a difficult time coping with hearing loss, or the anxiety associated with not knowing when the next Meniere\u2019s episode will occur, consider joining a support group or seeing a psychologist.<\/p>\n<p>A psychologist with experience in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can offer you the tools you need to reduce your anxiety and improve your quality of life. Relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and yoga can also help to reduce the anxiety you may be experiencing.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Can a Meniere\u2019s attack be prevented?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Certain medications can be prescribed to reduce the frequency and severity of a Meniere\u2019s attack, as well as to relieve inner ear pressure, tinnitus and vertigo symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Making some changes to your diet may also help to reduce the frequency of an attack.
