{"id":9741,"date":"2021-02-06T19:49:22","date_gmt":"2021-02-06T19:49:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/?page_id=9741"},"modified":"2021-07-15T11:26:59","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T11:26:59","slug":"pink-eye-or-allergies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/childrens-vision\/guide-to-pediatric-eye-conditions\/a-guide-to-eye-infections\/pink-eye-or-allergies\/","title":{"rendered":"Pink Eye or Allergies?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Do you find that you sometimes struggle to open your eyes due to severe eye discomfort?<\/h2>\n<p>Eye allergy symptoms can sometimes mimic an eye infection, making it difficult to know whether a trip to the eye doctor is warranted or not.<\/p>\n<p><i>This page will discuss the differences between an eye allergy and conjunctivitis, though it is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical care.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is conjunctivitis?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Infectious conjunctivitis, commonly known as \u2018pink eye\u2019, is one of the most common eye infections.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When blood vessels in the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers your eye, become infected by a virus or bacteria, an infection can develop.<\/p>\n<p><i>Common pink eye symptoms:<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Pink or red eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Itchy eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Excessive tearing<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Increased tear production<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Thick yellow discharge<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Crust in eye corner<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Foreign body sensation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Different types of conjunctivitis<\/h2>\n<p>There are two different types of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometrists.org\/dry-eye\/conjunctivitis-and-eye-infections\/\">infectious conjunctivitis<\/a>: Bacterial and viral.<\/p>\n<p><b>1) Bacterial conjunctivitis<\/b> is a highly contagious, bacterial eye infection that can affect one or both eyes. In many cases, it starts out in one eye and then spreads to the other eye.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bacterial conjunctivitis affects around 135 in 10,000 Americans annually.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Common symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Pink or red eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Crust in eyelid corners<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Yellow or green discharge<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Swollen eyelids<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Eyelids that are stuck together upon waking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your child has bacterial conjunctivitis, an antibiotic eye drop, ointment, or oral medication will be prescribed to eliminate the bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms should subside within a couple of days after treatment, but your child could still be contagious for up to two weeks.<\/p>\n<p><b>2) Viral conjunctivitis (pink eye)<\/b> is a highly contagious, viral eye infection that generally affects both eyes, and often accompanies a cold, sore throat, or fever.<\/p>\n<p><b>Viral conjunctivitis is the most common form of pink eye.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Common symptoms of viral conjunctivitis include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Pink eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Itchy eyes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Watery discharge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your child has viral conjunctivitis, symptoms usually subside within a week to 10 days.<\/p>\n<p>Although there is no medication to treat viral pink eye, you can help to relieve uncomfortable symptoms by applying warm or cold wet compresses to your child\u2019s eyes.
